Curious about chiropractic care?

In this article, our chiropractor Dr. Max answers some of the most frequently asked questions we hear at the clinic. From what a chiropractic adjustment really is to how treatments like shockwave therapy work, get the answers you need from the expert.

What is an adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a hands on technique where the chiropractor applies a quick controlled movement to a stiff or restricted joint to improve its motion reduce pain and help your nervous system work better. The popping sound is just tiny gas bubbles releasing from the joint fluid when the pressure changes inside the joint kind of like when you crack your knuckles not bones touching or grinding. Think of a jar lid that is a bit stuck and wont turn smooth then a quick twist frees it up and the click you hear is just the pressure inside the seal letting go so the same idea happens in a joint.

It is a completely safe procedure and patients have the full control on deciding whether to pursue with an adjustment or not. There are many alternative treatments such as immobilization, instrament assisted soft tissue therapy, shockwave therapy, and myofascial release therapy which are all just as effective.

What is meant by a "slipped" disc?

The phrase often refers to one of two things: a disc herniation or a disc bulge. A bulging disc involves the outer layer of the disc coming out, whereas a herniated disc involves the inner softer cartilage sticking out and is more likely to cause pain and other nerve-related symptoms.

What does shockwave therapy do?

With shockwave therapy, we use acoustic sound waves that penetrate the tissue to help restore and expedite the healing process. Some of the benefits of shockwave therapy include releasing trigger points, breaking down calcification, new blood vessel formation, and reversing chronic inflammation. At our clinic, shockwave therapy is included with chiropractic appointments at no extra cost and can be used on various parts of the body such as shoulder, hips, legs, elbows, and feet.

When is it appropriate to see a chiropractor?

In many cases, it’s appropriate to see a chiropractor any time you’re dealing with discomfort, mobility limitations, or simply want guidance on how to move and function better. Chiropractors have a broad toolkit that goes far beyond spinal adjustments, and so you don’t need to wait for a specific type of pain or injury to seek care. Chiropractic can be a helpful first step whenever something doesn’t feel quite right or you’re looking to stay proactive with your health.

At our clinic, chiropractic care is part of a multidisciplinary team. Our practitioners frequently collaborate with physiotherapists, massage therapists, and other providers to ensure you get the most comprehensive and appropriate care for your goals. If your situation would benefit from another modality (or a combination), we coordinate that seamlessly so you don’t have to navigate it on your own.

For anyone who’s unsure whether chiropractic is a good fit, we offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation. This is an information-only session designed to answer questions, discuss your concerns, and help you decide what next steps feel right for you.
